Body to Be Taken to St. Peter’s Basilica
Matteo Bruni, the spokesperson for the Vatican, informed the media that Pope Francis' body will be moved to St. Peter’s Basilica on Wednesday, April 23. There, people will be able to come and pay their respects.
Details about the funeral will be announced after a meeting of the cardinals.
Health Struggles in Recent Months
Pope Francis had been in poor health for some time. He was taken to the hospital on February 14 due to bronchitis. His condition worsened and doctors found he had pneumonia. After 38 days in the hospital, he returned home to continue his recovery. He had a history of lung issues, including a surgery in his youth where part of his lung was removed.
In late 2023, he also cancelled a visit to the UAE due to lung inflammation and the flu.
Funeral Plans and Pope’s Last Wishes
Pope Francis had recently approved a new version of the funeral rites for popes. This new version focuses more on faith and spirituality rather than ceremony and power. The Pope had requested that his funeral be kept simple and focused on the message of hope in Christ.
The Vatican will soon share more details about the funeral.
