Google Adds iPhone-Like Reboot Feature in April Android Update

Google has released a new security update for Android phones in April 2025, and one feature stands out—it’s similar to something Apple introduced last year. If your Android phone stays locked and unused for three days, it will now automatically restart.

This move is designed to make it harder for thieves (and even law enforcement) to access your phone without permission. Apple first introduced a similar feature in iOS 18.1 in November 2024.

Why is this Feature Important?

When a phone is restarted, it becomes more secure. Here’s how it works, based on Apple’s system:

  • Before First Unlock (BFU): After a reboot, the phone stays in a highly secure state until the user unlocks it using a passcode or biometrics.

  • This means limited actions can be taken before the phone is unlocked.

  • By rebooting the phone automatically after three days, it makes sure your data is harder to access if someone else gets their hands on your phone.

While Google hasn't explained exactly how it works on Android, it's likely using a similar concept to boost privacy and protection.

What else is in the April 2025 Android update?

Google’s April system update brings several improvements:

  • Private Compute Services v25 (April 15) and Google Play Services v25.14 (April 14).

  • Fixes bugs related to account management.

  • Improves device connection and sharing features, like Quick Transfer preview.

  • Updates the location history settings page with a new design using Google’s Material components.

  • System time zone updates and a refreshed Usage and Diagnostics screen UI.

  • New features in Google Wallet: you can now nickname your passes.

  • Better battery life, connectivity improvements, and a cool “Ask a Question” option for videos.

So in short, Android is getting more secure, more user-friendly, and a bit more like iPhone in the best way possible.
