Apple to Make Most iPhones for US in India by 2026

Apple is planning to make most of the iPhones it sells in the United States in India by the end of 2026. This is a big step in moving production away from China due to rising trade tensions and tariffs.

To reach this goal, Apple wants to double iPhone production in India to over 80 million units per year. Right now, Apple makes a little over 40 million iPhones in India. The US alone buys more than 60 million iPhones each year.

This shift began during the COVID-19 pandemic when Apple faced delays due to strict lockdowns in China. Trade issues and high import taxes also pushed Apple to reduce its reliance on Chinese factories.

In the past year, Apple made iPhones worth ₹1.87 lakh crore ($22 billion) in India, a 60% increase from the year before. About 20% of all iPhones are now made in India, though China still makes the majority.

Most of the iPhones in India are made at Foxconn’s plant in southern India. Indian company Tata Group is also helping with production, after buying Wistron’s local business and working with Pegatron. Both Tata and Foxconn are building new factories to increase production even more.

In total, Apple exported ₹1.5 lakh crore ($17.5 billion) worth of iPhones from India in the past year.

Thanks to recent changes, iPhones made in India won’t face extra import taxes in the US, making this move even more beneficial for Apple.

Now, Apple also makes all its iPhone models in India, including the premium iPhone Pro with titanium body. This is possible with help from the Indian government, which supports manufacturing through special subsidies as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s plan to make India a global factory.
