A young woman from Andhra Pradesh, V Deepthi, tragically lost her life in a hit-and-run accident in the United States, just weeks before she was supposed to graduate.
Deepthi, 24, was from Guntur district and was studying for her Master’s degree at the University of North Texas. On April 12, she was walking home with her friend Snigdha near Carril Al Lago Drive in Denton, Texas, when a speeding car hit them and drove away without stopping.
Deepthi suffered serious head injuries and passed away on April 15. Her friend Snigdha is currently recovering after surgery and is said to be in stable condition.
Deepthi was set to graduate in May. Her family had been excited to attend the ceremony in the US and see her fulfill her dream. They had made many sacrifices for her education — even selling their farmland to support her studies abroad.
Her father, Hanumantha Rao, shared that he last spoke to her briefly before she rushed to class, promising to call on Sunday. Sadly, that was the final conversation they had.
Deepthi had completed her BTech from Narasaraopet Engineering College before heading to the US to pursue higher education. Her family is now preparing to bring her body back home to India. Telugu associations in the US are helping with the arrangements, and her body is expected to arrive in Hyderabad on Monday.
This heartbreaking incident follows another recent tragedy where a student from Telangana, G Praveen, was found dead in Wisconsin with bullet injuries. He, too, had moved to the US in 2023 for his Master's studies.
