Kesari 2, starring Akshay Kumar, R Madhavan, and Ananya Panday, hit the big screen on Good Friday, but its box office numbers on Day 1 have been underwhelming. According to early estimates from trade tracker Sacnilk, the film has earned only around Rs 5.46 crore by 7:30 pm on its opening day.
Despite having 3,619 shows across India, the movie had a low occupancy rate of about 16.22%. Morning shows saw just 12.67% attendance, while the afternoon shows did slightly better with 19.76%.
This performance is disappointing when compared to the original Kesari (2019), which opened at Rs 21.06 crore and eventually made over Rs 208 crore worldwide. That film was based on the Battle of Saragarhi and became a major hit.
Kesari 2, directed by Karan Singh Tyagi, is inspired by the book The Case That Shook the Empire and focuses on the legal battle after the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. The film has been well-received by critics, but the opening numbers suggest it may struggle to cross double digits in its first-day earnings.
Produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions, the film still has the weekend to improve its box office run.
