Nissan Slashes Rogue SUV Production in Japan Amid U.S. Tariff Hike

Big changes are happening at Nissan! The automaker is cutting back production of its top-selling U.S. SUV – the Rogue – in Japan from May to July 2025, and here's why 👇

🛑 What’s Going On?

Thanks to a new 25% tariff on overseas-made cars imposed by President Trump, building cars in Japan for the U.S. market just got a lot more expensive. Nissan is now rethinking its entire strategy to stay competitive.

🔧 What’s Changing?

  • ⚙️ 13,000 fewer Rogue SUVs will be built in Japan’s Kyushu plant

  • That’s over 20% of the Rogues sold in the U.S. during the first 3 months of 2025!

  • Workers at the plant will face reduced hours and intermittent production halts

  • Nissan will continue with two shifts a day – for now

📊 Why It Matters:

The Rogue is a major player in Nissan’s lineup – nearly 1 in 4 U.S. sales comes from this model. While production continues in Tennessee, Nissan had to pivot quickly to avoid taking a hit.

Nissan’s Response:

“We’re reviewing our supply chain and production strategy to stay efficient and support our workforce,” said Nissan.

Their new CEO, Ivan Espinosa, is under pressure to revive Nissan’s U.S. presence, which has struggled due to an aging lineup and fewer hybrid models.

🚘 It’s Not Just Nissan...

  • Stellantis paused production in Mexico and Canada, affecting 900 U.S. workers

  • Honda is moving its next-gen Civic Hybrid production from Mexico to Indiana

🌍 The Big Picture:

Tariffs are shaking up the global car industry – and automakers are scrambling to adapt. For Nissan, this might just be the beginning of a bigger shift in how and where cars are made.
