Nissan Plans EV Expansion with US-Made Models and Potential Truck

Nissan is working on a strong comeback in the electric vehicle (EV) market. The company is building a brand-new EV platform that could support up to five new models—like crossovers, sedans, and maybe even a compact electric pickup truck.

Here’s the good news for American buyers: all of these new vehicles will be built in the United States. This move also helps Nissan avoid extra costs from tariffs on imported vehicles.

Ponz Pandikuthira, Nissan’s product planning head for the Americas, said the company is focusing on smaller vehicle segments. The new EVs will have next-gen electric motors and better batteries that charge faster and cost less. Nissan might also team up with another car company to save money on production.

First Up: Crossovers

Nissan was originally planning to launch electric sedans first. But now, the first vehicles using this platform will be crossovers—one from Nissan and one from Infiniti. One of these models is expected to hit the market in 2028, depending on demand.

Both crossovers will be built at Nissan’s plant in Canton, Mississippi. The Nissan version will have a rugged design, while the Infiniti will look more stylish and sleek.

Could a Compact Electric Pickup Be Next?

Nissan is also thinking about making a small electric pickup truck. It hasn’t been confirmed yet, but the company sees potential in this growing segment. Many buyers want an eco-friendly truck for outdoor adventures—without the big gas-guzzling engines.

Pandikuthira explained that this could be a niche market now, but it may grow in the future.

Electric Sedans Still Uncertain

Nissan isn’t sure what to do with electric sedans just yet. Making a cheap one is hard, and luxury sedans don’t match Nissan’s brand. The company may even continue producing the current Altima until 2027, even though it was supposed to be retired this year.
